It’s no coincidence that I am sharing this very special wedding with you on Memorial Day, a day we give thanks and remember those who paid the ultimate price for our country. You see, I was raised in a military family. My father served, my grandfather served, and my uncle gave his life in service to this country. Both my father and grandfather’s experience and sacrifices in the military and the effect of Bill’s death were felt in our family forever. But also felt was the hope left in us through their courage, strength, and honor.
Michael is a war veteran who put his life on the line for his country and his fellow “ghost troopers” in the middle east. The experience changed him, but it also made him stronger. Strong enough to be exactly the man that Wendy needed in her life. Their love story started in college. Wendy was working in the book store and Michael was there furthering his education. After a little flirting across the counter, they went their separate ways. It wasn’t quite their time. But the fates kept crossing their paths until it was right. They both had to go through some things in life in order to be ready for each other. And the commitment and love they have together is clear within just a few minutes spending time with them. You know they are going to make it through forever together.
And so today we celebrate. We celebrate the brave men and women who served and continue to serve our country. We celebrate the support of the families, the communities, and the people who love those who serve. And we celebrate love. The love that rises from the ashes, that weathers the storms, that sweeps us off of our feet. Love like this, love like Michael and Wendy….alive, strong, and beautiful. Is it a coincidence that Wendy’s new last name is Strong? I think not.
