As the old saying goes, you get what you give. And for Kelley and Martin, as witnesses by the depth of love they found in each other, it really is true! These two first met while doing service work at Sierra Service Project (SSP) in the summer of 2008. If you haven’t heard of SSP, it’s a wonderful non-profit organization that, as part of their many offerings to communities around the world, also has a summer program where youth groups do home repair work for folks in need. Campers dedicate a part of their summer to doing good deeds ranging from roofing work and building wheelchair ramps to drywall repairs and painting. Kelley and Martin spent half their summer there, Martin serving as the Home Repair Coordinator and Kelley as Camp Cook!
But that’s not where the love part of their story begins, the seeds were merely planted (unbeknownst to them at the time). It wasn’t until the summer of 2011 when they again found themselves working for SSP (this time Martin as Site Director and Kelley as Spiritual Life Coordinator) that they realized their love for one another.
And the rest of the story is reflective of how it started. An engagement at a specially planned picnic for two on a beautiful trail in the Pursima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve and an Apple Hill wedding under the open sky of the Sierra Nevadas at the High Sierra & Iris Gardens, complete with sunflowers (Kelley’s favorite) and all of their friends and loved ones. All of these important moments were spent under the eyes of God and the tall trees. I feel so blessed to have been a witness to it all. Life is good.
