Ever since I saw Wings over California, I’ve challenged myself and my family to get out and enjoy our state a little more. I mean, California is a pretty cool place with a lot of great things to do and see, so we should get out and enjoy it all, right? So we decided to just go for it this weekend and headed over to the city to check out the infamous Alcatraz. Being so close to Halloween, it made sense to go somewhere spooky!
We stayed at Parc 55 in the city. It was a great hotel, but I still think my favorite is the Westin (formerly the Argent). I took a few early morning sunrise pictures from our room in the comfort of my jammies before we left for the day (trust me; this is the best way to take pictures before 8:00am)! The we headed over to Max’s for brunch and hopped on the F-Line street car to Pier 33.
It was a bit cold and rainy, but hey, this is San Francisco in October, so there you go. The prison itself was very, very….interesting. What a wild concept, a maximum security prison on an island with underground tunnels. It just sounds made-up. The whole place was just so isolated, but in a very cool way. We learned a lot of facts about prision life back then and about the island itself.
It had been too long since we’ve been to good old San Fran. I see many more day trips in our future.
Here are a few snaps from our outing.
Love the landscape shots! I would love to visit some day… your photos make me want to go even more!
I really enjoyed viewing these photographs. That first one of the evening skyline is beautiful!
great photos, looks like you have nice trip
your work is clean and always inspiring. keep up the great work.
I’ve never been to Alcatraz but I’ve always wanted to…. what an interesting and beautiful place. I like the shot third from the bottom, of the child running next to the derelict building.
I AGREE! The first shot is stunning. I love the succulents, and the images give me the creeps (in a good way). You have made me REALLY want to visit, and your pictures do a lovely job of telling me the story–the construction, the isolation, the cold, dark feeling of the place. Really neat.
(p.s. the kids are ridiculous, too. Whatever so cute.)
what a sweet family you have 🙂
great photos
graet photos. I love the film escape from alcatraz. love the lines you used
Fantastic field trip!! Love the sunrise skyline, the funky succulent-like plants, and hey, nothing like a little seaside shuffleboard for the creepy criminals. Makes me want to rent that old flick, “Escape from Alcatraz.”
Oh you are much more gutsy than I! Imagine doing a TTD session there though! That would be awesome! Love the skyline shot girl!
Those are some STELLAR landscapes. Awesome!
